Introduction: A Region in Crisis
The summer drought of 2018 had a significant impact on agriculture in and around Coimbatore and the wider Kongu region. Due to the failure of consecutive monsoons, rainfall levels dropped drastically, leading to severe water scarcity for irrigation. Water sources such as the Bhavani River and reservoirs like Siruvani Dam experienced very low water levels, which reduced the availability of water for agricultural activities. As groundwater levels declined, many bore wells and open wells used by farmers dried up, making it difficult to sustain crops.
The Struggle: A Farm on the Brink
Following the severe drought conditions that affected the region around Coimbatore, many farmers struggled to sustain their crops due to extreme water scarcity. One such farmer was Mr. Venkitapathy from Sulthanpet, who owns a 40-acre coconut farm. His plantation consisted of nearly 30-year-old coconut trees, and as groundwater levels declined drastically, he faced a major irrigation crisis. Despite trying numerous methods to conserve water and protect the trees, none proved effective.
The situation became so severe that he was unable to irrigate even 7 acres of his farm properly. The prolonged stress on the plantation pushed him to take a drastic decision — he began removing the plantation and cut down nearly 600 coconut trees in an attempt to prevent further losses.
However, his family was deeply concerned about removing the remaining trees and convinced him to give the farm one final chance. They suggested visiting Farmagain to explore whether technology could offer a solution. Though Mr. Venkitapathy remained skeptical at first, he eventually decided to try a new approach.
Before adopting the new system, Mr. Venkitapathy was using surface drip irrigation, where the laterals were laid above the soil. Due to the high salt content in his irrigation water, the drip emitters frequently faced scaling and clogging issues, which reduced water flow and made the irrigation system unreliable. This further complicated water management on the farm.
The Solution: Subsurface Irrigation + GoTron®
To overcome this challenge, he upgraded the farm’s irrigation infrastructure by implementing a subsurface drip irrigation system along with Farmagain’s GoTron® technology in 2023. In this system, pressure-compensated drip laterals are buried nearly one foot below the soil surface, allowing water to be delivered directly to the root zone of the coconut trees. By placing the laterals underground, the system also reduces scaling and clogging issues caused by salt deposits and minimizes evaporation losses.

This method ensures that water reaches the root zone efficiently while maintaining uniform soil moisture throughout the field.
Efficient irrigation in coconut farming is fundamentally based on understanding the crop’s actual water requirement, which is determined using the concept of evapotranspiration. This represents the total water lost through soil evaporation and plant transpiration.

This is where GoTron® plays a crucial role. Moisture sensors installed in the soil continuously measure the moisture content of the root zone. Based on this real-time data, the GoTron® system automatically schedules irrigation according to the actual water requirement of the crop. Instead of applying excess water, the system provides only the precise amount needed by the plant, taking into account evapotranspiration losses and soil moisture levels.
Through this smart irrigation approach, water usage was reduced by nearly 50%, while ensuring that the plants received consistent and optimal moisture.
The results were remarkable. With improved irrigation efficiency and better water management, the health of the coconut trees improved significantly. The increased efficiency also meant that Mr. Venkitapathy could expand irrigation from 7 acres to 14 acres using the same available water resources, and still maintain an abundant water reserve.

Over time, he also implemented multi-layer farming practices, which helped create a better microclimate within the farm, improved soil health, and further enhanced water utilization.
Fast forward to 2026, and the transformation is evident. Mr. Venkitapathy now manages his farm with confidence and peace of mind. His coconut trees are healthier, water usage has become far more efficient, and the farm ecosystem has become more resilient to climatic stress.
The story of Mr. Venkitapathy demonstrates how the implementation of Farmagain’s GoTron® technology and precision irrigation can revive stressed farms and restore farmer confidence even after severe drought conditions. His journey stands as a powerful example of how innovation, combined with the willingness to adapt, can transform agricultural challenges into opportunities for sustainable and water-efficient farming.
This a classic case study of reviving a coconut farm through smart irrigation.
